Tips from the Auto Insurance Specialists
Listed among some of the most risky driving weather conditions, fog presents undeniable visibility challenges.
RELATED: how to drive in icy conditions
The best possible piece of advice you can get if foggy conditions are severe is not to drive at all.
For those that must drive, be sure to follow the important guide below.
Six Things to do when driving in a Fog
- Drive slower.
Minimum speed limits are posted with good driving conditions in mind. When conditions turn bad as in a fog, make sure to drive at a reduced speed and allow a good distance between your vehicle and the one ahead. This will allow for more response time in the event you encounter a road hazard or need to stop. - Turn on your low-beam lights.
Allow others to see you by turning on your low-beam headlights. Refrain from turning on your high-beams as it will impair the other driver’s vision, as well as yours by reflecting the light. - Turn on windshield wipers and defroster
Both functions will help wipe off the fog’s moisture and give you better visibility.
- Concentrate on your driving.
Listening to radio and talking to your passengers may be okay when driving in normal safe conditions, but multi-tasking should be avoided when behind the wheel in a fog. Avoid doing anything except focusing on how to drive safely in risky weather circumstances. - Keep your window open.
A rolled down car window allows other traffic to be kept within your earshot, allowing you to be forewarned about any oncoming road hazards when your visibility is impaired. - Locate a parking spot to wait it out.
If your visibility is extremely impaired by the fog, don’t fight it: park in a safe spot and resume driving when the fog dissipates.
